Monster Kolor Application Instructions

1. Wipe figure down 2-3 times with 70% rubbing alcohol THROUGHLY ! (even in the hard to reach areas)

2 Pour color directly into airbrush..For brighter color application shake up & spray white base as your first coat and then layer your colors on top of the white.

3. Layer your colors in sequence from light to dark. Example : White,Yellow,Orange,Blue, Purple, etc
Color can be poured back into bottle to eliminate waste

4. After Colors are applied now you can add specialty paints direct over paints. Example : Pearls,Flakes, etc

Note : the colors will appear dull in appearence up to this point. Dont worry this is correct.

5. Once all paint is applied, warm over figure with blow dryer to dry up any remaining areas in preperation for clear coating.

6. Clear Coat : Use in a well ventilated area! Must use an OSHA approved respirator while spraying. This is a 2 component system. It is mixed 2:1 ( 2 parts clear 1 part activator) . Mix small amount with mixing cup provided. For micro mixture please mix 1 part clear ½ part activator.

Usually, 1 coat of clear is all that’s required for the desired gloss level. If you chose to do 2 coats please allow 15 minutes wait time before 2nd coat of clear application.

7. Place figure in a dust free environment at 60 degrees or warmer for 24 hours to cure.

8. If your going to store Monster Kolor for a long period of time between uses I recommend placing the cap plugs back into the bottles to avoid air getting into the bottle and possibly evaporating the solvents out of the paint.

Am I correct in assuming this is a lacquer based paint?

Without getting crazy chemical talk on you ."Yes" lacquer based for the sake of talking. It's a hybrid of sorts designed to adhere to many different surfaces. 100% solvent based.

Any suggestions on activator storage/thinning? I keep my clear and activator in a sealed bag, and the sealed bag within an airtight container. I checked my activator this morning, and it is now a very thick gel. In the past I've thinned it with acetone, and still had clogging issues with my gun. Is there a better thinner besides acetone or lacquer thinner, or do I need to buy more activator?

lacquer thinner works better than acetone.  I've had clogging issues before as well and I always make sure to put alot of thinner now.  I usually mix my clear and activator then thin it to the consistency of water with lacquer thinner.  I dunno if you can thin the activator first as well to ensure proper mixing??

I don't know if you guys know it, but this information is priceless, it's taken a lot of money in paint and thinners to come up with the right formulas to spray the right paint consistency, but I digress.  I'm not asking for anything, I just thin it's great that someone else will have the ability to save time and money, and be able to completely concentrate on the craft.  Laquer thinner eats through vinyl, no matter what you think, it's creating pinholes in your vinyl.  acetone won't damage the vinyl, but isn't strong enough to properly break down the paint.  If your an artist that's been using an airbrush most of your life, you have nothing to worry about, because you don't leave pools of paint, but if your like me...  Well, I like to use a mixture of both, with a little denatured alcohol.

My standard self mixture consists of 1/2 oz of Laquer thinner to 1 1/2 oz of acetone and 2 oz denatured alcohol, make sure your using denatured, Isopropyl alcohol is water based and will not mix with MK.  This mixture works great, but even that is my last resort.

My first choice is a special thinner I buy in the country that works great, I won't say the name, because I'm not sure what the legality is of endorsing such dangerous products, but I will say this, at almost any hardware store, you can find a paint thinner type called MEK Thinner, which stands for Methyl Ethyl Ketone.  It's the perfect thinner, for any solvent based paint, it won't damage, your vinyl at all, and it perfectly thins out your paint.  Try it out you won't be disappointed.

Jack, sounds to me like the activator is going bad. Contact me for a new one. In hot areas Florida, etc unused activator can start to gel from the heat.
As for thinning products. All of you seem to have your own recipies. Universal thinner works best for thinning mk. A lot of you have asked if lacquer thinner or acetone will work. My answer is "yes" however, uni thinner is what we recommend for best results.

So is the universal thinner appropriate for the activator, or does your statement stand that it has gone bad? If the heat is a culprit, I guess I'll refrigerate future batches.

Its gone bad. Mk and refridgerators are a huge health hazard.

So is Universal thinner a brand or a type. Who makes it ? Where can you get it ?

Monster Kolor universal thinner made to thin mk paint and clear coats. Its in the store.

What is the chemical makeup, of your universal thinner?

If I got a separate refrigerator, would that help preserve the life of my activator? Would it help with paint storage?
