Welcome to the world wide headquarters for Monster Kolor. This interactive community is a place for all who are interested in the custom painting of toys of all kinds. Feel free to look around, but I encourage you to join in.
glug glug ... sorry for the lack of posts .. well you can mostly find me on Tweeter ( maxtoyco ) but Matt told me to post some stuff I've been doing so here it is ;-)
I highly recommend his new VividTone line .. the Pink and Yellow are VERY bright ... my eyes tweek out a bit when I spray them, thats how Vivid they are .. make the normal yellow look dull, even though it's not dull ;-) well you know what i mean ... ;-)
anyhow, Monster Kolor continues to amaze me paint wise .. and since it's pre mixed so easy to use !
Been busy prepping for the 5th Anniversary Max Toy shows in Tokyo and San Francisco, plus Matt's In Living Kolor San Francisco Tour !! Man wait till you hear the line up of painters he's got coming ...! Make your plans and show up at Double Punch San Francisco on Saturday April 23rd, 2011 !!! Live painting with Monster Kolor on toys .. come and give it a try, for free ! Or watch your favorite customizer spray away !!! Gonna be Fun !!!!
Everything below is for sale at the Dragatomi show, Monster Party opens Jan 8th, 2011 in Sacramento, CA .. I'll be there plus Gatchbert too ( Lil Japan and DLUX also in the show )
phew .. back to work for me ....
the picture above was painted with acrylics on canvas board, but i did my final varnish with Monster Kolor Clear Coat ! Sprayed down nice and smooth, and when dry is a super glossy finish ;-) Nice ...

Permalink Reply by Paperdaniel on December 6, 2011 at 3:17pm wow mark. i dig em all but seriously - - the catlizard monster and the fishy are super twisted. what a neato sculpt. very fresh and sorta different, and thats what im always after. it looks like yamomark madness to me. is it? where and when can i find such a thing. it can be difficult to find this type of vinyl as its definately off the beaten kaiju path. i must acquire a set for my very own. who's makin this crazy toy?
Permalink Reply by mark nagata on December 6, 2011 at 4:21pm ah thats kaiju Negora .. designed by artist Konatsu and sculpted by Yohihko Makino of TTToy.
Its a Cat Kaiju though influenced by Yokai legends of giant cats ;-)
Max Toy makes and sells them .. but they have so far sold out each time ... Medicom has 2 up for sale on 12/10, I think but thats for Japan .. I will have a Dec Max Toy version in a few weeks .. but to be honest the list of who wants one far exceeds the amount we ordered.. and we doubled our initial orders to boot ....

i believe in toy karma. i do. the strange wishy powers that if you've been fair and kind to other toyfiends - will cause a toy you've been after for years to suddenly find you and drop right into your waiting hands for little more than milkmoney. ohh, i love when it happens to me. it happens often. recently with a fewmany/kaijin "monster dream house." not only did it come to me..it came from a friend and he lived local. i was totally plussed. beyond happy. crystal clear w/rainbow glitter. wow. but hopefully i didnt use up all my stored toykarma, because in the near future i want to apply some towards that monstercat and fishyfish.
i have already added the Negora and fish set to my list with a little asterisk and footnote that reads "mr nagata said it will be quite difficult to acquire this sculpt and that the waiting list is longer than rip van stinkles dirty beard."
i took some liberties when i quoted you. ;)

Permalink Reply by Paperdaniel on December 8, 2011 at 1:19pm i do so love these wonderful objects..i feel guilty when i call them toys as there is so much more to them. even though i dont chase 24-7 anymore, i dont disparage anyone who does. plus..anybody poking around on boards such as skullbrain can see for themselves that people take this artform deadly serious. they love and respect the toys and the walletbusting chase. the passion is undeniable. these people are dedicated to being satiated..dedicated to quench that thirst for that one more piece that will tie in a collection or shelf they are working on. i think its proof of the hidden value in these objects. if they are simply just plastic toys and thats all - - why all the rage and fevered seeking for just a toy? no, they seem to be much more. much much more.
it is for each collector to decide if they ever want to sit down and give it thought...what am i really chasing..what is it that i'm after? am i buying back my childhood? am i creating a new childhood as an adult? are these toys my "flowers" and my shelves my "garden?" do i just like the look..the creative design? am i an artist of sorts? am i curating a collection so others can enjoy this after i am gone?
matt, i really think there is a lot to be discovered still in this artform. its history is exceptionally storied and beyond valuable as it encompasses so many genres and social stratifications. we love the outsider. we love the fringes of pop-history.
How do i know for sure there is soooo much more to our art/toy scene than meets the eye?
because you are a grown man chasing rare old japanese bath toys that miraculously escaped the landfill; and you can say that without laughing and continue the chase. i absolutely love what we all get to do. i freakin love it. i didnt find this kaiju vinyl arttoy thing. it was already here, so i am pretty sure that it was looking for me all along. it is the one that found me. it still looks for people like us every day. i for one am thrilled that new people are brought into our fold daily, and i dig to see a new fan run rabid chasing toys that you know they are gonna have a wicked hard time acquiring.
the chasers add important facets to our scene that we cant do without. they bring crazy passion and wild hunger..hype and bombast. they make the toydrops super fun..for me at least they do..i like to see the wishy faces all stressed that there wont be enough for them to score.
*the most important thing chasers do for us all, and continue to do for us is our heart center. they barter..they trade..make acquaintance with other collectors..share passions and toy lore..they ballbreak and tempt you with that one toy you need if you will trade them that one they need.
the chasers bring some big passion to the table, and that passion is infectious and hard to resist.

Permalink Reply by Seth Longmire on January 1, 2012 at 1:05am Saw one of your customs in person today, I should have nabbed a pic, I can't find it online. It was a wolf with an eyepatch (Randy?), at Bwana Spoon's Grasshut Corp.
Looked great!
